Religious Education Update from Mr. Alcott

Hi everyone!,
Have a wonderful and blessed Thanksgiving.  I am really enjoying having you all as students this year, and remember we will not have class next Wednesday, November 26th, in honor of Thanksgiving. Remember, your assignment to finish reading the book of Matthew is due when we meet again, and remember it will earn you a prize out of the cabinet.  Congrats Andy for being the first to finish!  The Life Nativity at the Rotary Winter Wonderland will happen before we meet again, so please contact me if you can help with that.  It would be a great service to our community, and a reminder to keep Christ in Christmas.

'Tis the Season...La, La, La, La, La!!!! - Fun Student Service Opportunities for the Advent and Christmas Season!

Dear Sacred Heart and Corpus Christi High School Students,

So our kiddos just watched the Veggie Tales episode "Very Larry and the True Light of Christmas" (if you've never watched a Veggie Tales, I highly suggest it - Dave and I get a kick out of 'em as much as the kids do!) and the message they learned was that Christmas isn't just about all the fancy lights and decorations, but about giving and serving and the True Light of Christmas who is JESUS! :-)

The same is true of the Rotary Winter Wonderland......the lights without a doubt are AMAZING!!, but there are also even more amazing service components to the Rotary Winter Wonderland.

You are invited to participate in those awesome service opportunities.  Please let Mr. Dave Alcott, your youth minister, know ASAP if you can participate in one of the following service opportunities:

1) Live Nativity, 7-9PM, Friday, November 28th:  Bring the Live Nativity ALIVE with your joyful yet humble and respectful roles as Joseph, Mary, Shepherds and Wise Men

2) Food Collection, 5-7PM, 7-9PM, Friday, December 26th: Collect food for the poor with joyful gratitude at the entrance gate of Rotary Winter Wonderland

Fwd: Confirmation Photo

Hello newly confirmed Catholic students!
I am forwarding a group picture of your Confirmation.  Please enjoy the picture, and remember to pray daily (morning is best), attend Mass weekly without fail, and go to Confession regularly.  Statistically, 85% of you will stop going to Mass over the next five years.  Remember to stay close to Christ and His Church, and you won't become a statistic.

Remember that missing Mass without a valid reason is a grave sin.  Please see the Catechism references below, paragraphs 2180 and 2181

2180  The precept of the Church specifies the law of the Lord more precisely: "On Sundays and other holy days of obligation the faithful are bound to participate in the Mass."117 "The precept of participating in the Mass is satisfied by assistance at a Mass which is celebrated anywhere in a Catholic rite either on the holy day or on the evening of the preceding day."118 (2042, 1389)

2181  The Sunday Eucharist is the foundation and confirmation of all Christian practice. For this reason the faithful are obliged to participate in the Eucharist on days of obligation, unless excused for a serious reason (for example, illness, the care of infants) or dispensed by their own pastor.119 Those who deliberately fail in this obligation commit a grave sin.

These are the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit you received last month on September 20th.

Wisdom

  • The gift of wisdom enlightens the spirit to feel God's presence in the everyday events of ordinary life.

Understanding

  • The Holy Spirit grants understanding as a guide in a Catholic's daily life and decisions. Confirmed Catholics have access to a greater capacity for understanding through prayer, discernment and the sacraments.

Right judgment

  • This gift heightens the sense of right and wrong. It also gives young Catholics the strength, through prayer and devotion, to reject what is wrong and choose what is right.

Courage

  • The Holy Spirit endows newly confirmed members of the faith with greater courage to live out their faith in the face of ridicule and hardship.

Knowledge

  • Reading scripture and studying the life of Jesus Christ can be more fruitful once a Catholic has been given the special gift of knowledge through Confirmation. Study of Scripture and the tradition of the Catholic faith are also more effective under the light of the Holy Spirit.

Reverence

  • This gift is also called "piety." It opens the newly confirmed to a greater capacity for respect and trust in God and the Church. Like all gifts of the Holy Spirit, reverence must be fostered, encouraged and practiced vigorously to reach its full potential.

Wonder and awe

  • This gift is also called "fear of the Lord." It opens the eyes of the heart to see God's glory and holiness more fully. Recognizing God's power, perfection and goodness, a spiritual person can only respond and with wonder, awe and fear. This gift unites a soul more honestly with the God of creation.

These are the Baptismal promises you recently renewed last month on September 20th. Keep your promises!

Renewal of Baptismal Promises
After the homily the candidates stand and the bishop questions them:
Bishop: Do you reject Satan and all his works and all his empty promises?
Candidates: I do.
Bishop: Do you believe in God the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth?
Candidates: I do.
Bishop: Do you believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was born of the Virgin Mary, was crucified, died, and was buried, rose from the dead, and is now seated at the right hand of the Father?
Candidates: I do.
Bishop: Do you believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who came upon the apostles at Pentecost and today is given to you sacramentally in confirmation?
Candidates: I do.
Bishop: Do you believe in the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting?
Candidates: I do.
Bishop: This is our faith. This is the faith of the Church. We are proud to profess it
in Christ Jesus our Lord.
All present: Amen.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns about our faith, and you are in my prayers.
       God Bless,
           David Alcott

Confirmation Class updates

Hi everyone!
We had a good class tonight, thank you all for being so attentive.  For homework I assigned the crossword puzzle at the end of chapter 1.  Please bring your bibles next week.  Here are some upcoming events, as soon as this weekend.  Please let me know what you are planning on attending so I can expect you.

This weekend on Saturday, October 18th we are doing the Rotary Winter Wonderland Lights Setup followed by a Disc Golf game, remember you will need service hours for Confirmation, so this is a good opportunity!
ALL TEENS are invited to HELP set up for Rotary WInter Wonderland 8AM-Noon at Wildwood Park and then PLAY Frisbee Golf at Hefko Park Noon-2PM.  Lunch is included. LOTS of help is needed which can turn into LOTS of fun!

We are also looking for help with the Oktoberfest meal on Saturday, October 25th from 4-7pm to raise money for the 9th graders to attend the Immersion retreat in the Dells or the Pilgrimage for Life in Washington DC.  We need lots of help, please send me a message if you can help with this important event!  Thank you to Nathan who already volunteered.

The Immersion Retreat
The Immersion Retreat is a 2 day event at the Wilderness Resort in the Wisconsin Dells designed to help teens grow in their Faith.  85% of Catholic teens who are confirmed stop attending Church within five years, so we are doing all we can to reverse that trend.  The event involves Music led by "Traditional Division", talks by keynote speaker Mike Patin, testimonies, small group discussions, Eucharistic Adoration, Mass, Confession,  and time in the indoor waterpark.  We will leave by bus at 6:20am on November 8th, and return the evening of Sunday November 9th.  The full cost is $150, but we are fundraising to offset the cost with the OktoberFest dinner.  Please reply to this email to let me know if you are interested in sending your son or daughter to this amazing retreat.  We are making every effort to make sure that anyone who wants to go can attend, but we have to plan the transportation and turn in the paperwork soon.  I sent home a flyer and Release Form tonight.  There is more information in the following link.
http://www.dioceseoflacrosse.com/yya/ImmersionRetreat/index.htm

The Pilgrimage for Life is an event planned to help young people attend the March for Life in Washington D.C. The trip is from January 20th - 24th, 2015, and includes transportation, a sweatshirt, and sightseeing in our Nation's Capital. The March for Life is meant to send the message that every human being is precious from conception to natural death, and is planned around the anniversary of the Supreme Court Case Roe vs. Wade in 1973.  This is a wonderful event, and many young people attend multiple years, and form lasting friendships.  More information is in the link.  The cost is $330, again it would be offset by fundraising.  This is a great opportunity, please think and pray about attending.

Confirmation Guidelines including Dress Code

Hello, I am forwarding the important information below from Deacon Ray.

Confirmation is fast approaching. I hope you are getting excited.
Confirmation Practice is WED. SEPT. 17th @ 6:15 @ OLP.
Confirmation is SAT. SEPT. 20th @ the 5:30 PM Mass. We would like you at
the church @ 5 PM.

Confirmation Candidate Attire:
Stoles are not permitted

Males: No jeans, tank tops, golf shirts or shirts with wording. No tennis
shoes or sandals (I would recommend dress pants or khakis. A dress shirt
and tie) Tie is optional.

Females: No jeans, low cut tops, spaghetti string tops, or shirts with any
wording. If your dress is lowcut or backless, you may want to wear a shawl
or sweater.  Dresses should not be too short. No tennis shoes, sandals or
flip flops.

Reminder; No chewing of gum. You may want to also remind your sponsor and
other family memebers/guests as it is irreverant.
REMEMBER THIS IS A SACRAMENT YOU ARE RECEIVING IN THE CHURCH and not a
picnic or a party.

The question of having two sponsors was raised.  For the ceremony, only
one sponsor is allowed to accompany the candidate.  You can have the other
as a honored guest.
Thanks for your understanding and cooperation.  We want to proudly
represent our parishes when we have the honor of our bishop visiting and
conferring the Sacrament of Confirmation. Know how proud I am of you
taking the next step in your faith journey!

Alternate Plans for 9th Grade Religious Education Party

Hi everyone, this is David Alcott, the 9th grade religious education teacher for Sacred Heart/Corpus Christi.  I received some feedback last week that some of you would like to celebrate the end of the year without going to the roller rink with the other grades.

I think that is a good idea, but I will need some feedback and some help planning it.  I spoke with Deacon Ray about it, and he said he would be fine with providing food for the party, but said bowling is not an option.  A few options would be going to WildWood park and doing a cookout, and maybe Ultimate Frisbee, Softball, or Capture the Flag.  I would be happy to cook on one of the grills there, maybe bratwurst and burgers.  If we did that we could also invite familes, and ask everyone to bring a dish to pass.  Let me know if this sounds good, based on the feedback to this email, I'll decide what to do.  This would be on the same night as the roller skating party, Wednesday, April 30th.

         God bless,
              David Alcott

Hello everyone,
Thank you all for such good behavior on the trip to La Crosse today, we really visited some special places.

On Wednesday, April 2, 2014, Sacred Heart and Corpus Christi is offering two options for the for the Ninth Graders of the Religious Education Program.  There will be a regular class led by David Alcott at the regular time and place, from 6:15pm to 7:15pm.  There will also be time set aside for Reconciliation/Confessions during the regular class, so if you have not been to confession in a while, please attend the regular class, or attend confession at a regularly scheduled time in the bulletin.  It is a great Sacrament, and especially appropriate during Lent.

The other option is to go to Roger’s Cinema and watch the movie “God’s Not Dead”. For the student enrolled in the 9th grade, the Life Teen program will cover the $8.50 charge for the movie, a small soda and a small bag of popcorn. The cost of additional snacks or beverages will be at the expense of the attendee. This Number One Christian movie (which on its opening weekend earned third place at the box office) is an awesome family film about Christianity in today’s world, and lasts about two hours. We are encouraging the student’s parents/guardians to attend this family event.   For additional family members the $8.50 deal is available but it will be at their expense.

The tickets have to be preordered and that order must be received by Roger’s Cinema no later than 10:00 AM on Monday, March 31, 2014.  The order will be placed for all attendees (parents/guardian and children).  In order to have everything together, you must respond to this email by Sunday night on 3/30/14 if you would like to attend the movie.  Please send the names of who is attending.

If you are sending your child to the movie, please have the child to Roger’s Cinema no later than 5:40 PM on Wednesday April 2nd to obtain decent seating.  If anyone else other than the student are attending, please bring $8.50 in cash to make the transaction easy for each person. We will be meeting in the Lobby of Roger’s Cinema where the tickets will be handed out at 5:40 PM and then we enter the theater as a group.  Mrs. Fernandez will be the chaperone, so please find her in the lobby. The movie will be over around 8:10, so the students can be picked up then.  Enjoy the Movie!

Hello everyone,
Thank you all for your commitment to Religious Education. Please
read all three reminders below.

1. Next Wednesday, March 5th is Ash Wednesday. Instead of reporting to
class in the Sacred Heart School, go to Mass at Sacred Heart at 6:30pm.

2. I need Medical Release forms signed and returned to me for the March
29th Day of Reflection trip to La Crosse. We are meeting at the Our
Lady of Peace Parking lot at 6:45AM on March 29th. I have two back so
far, please return ASAP
In case you don't have the forms, I attached them in PDF format.
Please hand them in to David Alcott.

3. In two weeks, on Wednesday March 12th we will be doing the Stations
of the Cross, I am looking for volunteers who are willing to read a
short reflection from the lectern microphone on each of the Stations of
the Cross, they are a few sentences each. Your help would be very
appreciated! :-)

Thanks, God Bless, and stay warm!
